Champions League Round-up: English sides have bad results

Arsenal and Manchester City both lost their opening games in the Champions League as the English sides faced a tough return to the competition.

Man City were unlucky to lose 1-0 to Bayern Munich after a late Jerome Boateng goal. The ex-City defender came back to haunt them and put them in third place in their group.

Arsenal had a night to forget as they lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund, with the Germans missing a string of other clear-cut chances.

Chelsea faced yet another German side in the form of Schalke, and despite an early lead courtesy of a Cesc Fabregas goal, Schalke pulled one back to end the match 1-1.

Liverpool faced Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad in their return to the Champions League after a five-year absence. After a tight 80 minutes, Mario Balotelli scored his first Reds goal. However, the drama was not over as the Bulgarian side equalised with just two minutes left to play.

Just when it was looking bleak for Liverpool, a mis-controlled pass led to the Ludogorets keeper sliding into Javi Manquillo inside the area.

It was left up to Steven Gerrard to score the winning goal, and he did so emphatically, blasting the ball into the bottom corner to erupt the Anfield crowd.

  1. To be fair, all the teams excluding Liverpool did have tough fixtures so I wasn’t too surprised. I bet Chelsea were annoyed they couldn’t finish the game off though!
