Tough European draw for British sides

Manchester City will face Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League in what will be seen as a difficult draw for British sides in both the Champions and Europa League.

City, who beat Bayern Munich and Roma to qualify from their group, face one of the tournament favourites in Barcelona, who beat them at the same stage in last years competition.

Premier League leaders Chelsea will face French league winners Paris Saint-Germain, who have the formidable Zlatan Ibrahimovic in their ranks. They also have former Chelsea star David Luiz, who moved to PSG for £40 million in the summer.

Arsene Wenger will face a club he used to coach when Arsenal take on Monaco. Arsenal have faced tough opponents at this stage in the competition in recent years, having faced Barcelona, AC Milan and Bayern Munich (twice) in the last four years. However, they will see Monaco as opponents that Arsenal will have a fighting chance against.

In the Europa League, Scottish side Celtic will face European royalty in Inter Milan, who won the Champions League as recently as 2010.

Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League last week and they will enter the Europa League against Turkish team Besiktas, who beat Tottenham in their last group game. They boast former Chelsea striker Demba Ba in their ranks, but they will be hoping to avoid the same result as the last time the teams met, when Liverpool ran out 8-0 winners.

Merseyside rivals Everton will play Swiss team Young Boys, who they have never faced before but will fancy their chances against.

Finally, Tottenham Hotspur will play Italian side Fiorentina, and similar to Everton, the two teams have never faced each other before. Spurs may come up against on loan Manchester City defender Micah Richards, who is currently at the Florence outfit.

Champions League: All English teams progress

All four English sides have progressed in the Champions League.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all succeeded in progressing into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Arsenal probably had the toughest group but should be applauded for getting out of it. They led the group for many stages but a 2-0 loss to Napoli meant they lost out on top spot to last year’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund. Continue reading “Champions League: All English teams progress”
