The brilliant Zlatan Ibrahivomic will not be at the 2014 World Cup as his Swedish side were beaten 3-2 by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
The match, billed as the clash of two of the biggest names in football, was exactly that. Imbrahivomic and Ronaldo scored every one of their team’s goals in the two-game play-off. The Real Madrid man, 28, scored a hat-trick. After the the first leg ended 1-0 to Portugal, they then quickly added to that in the second. However, Imbrahivomic replied with two quick goals.
But Ronaldo finally won one of the greatest ever man versus man test on a football pitch as two goals in two minutes sent Portugal flying into the World Cup finals.
Imbahivomic promptly sad that he would not be watching the World Cup next year as it was not worth watching without him playing. Both players are up for the Ballon D’Or.
France were able to claw their way back into the World Cup against Ukraine. After a dismal first leg in Kiev where they lost 2-0, Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho scored two and Karim Benzema scored another to send the French through to the World Cup. They’ll be hoping to do better than in 2010, when, despite being runners-up in 2006, they went out at the group stage.
Iceland were unable to become the smallest country ever to reach the World Cup finals. The island, which has a population similar to Reading’s, fought well in the first leg where they drew 0-0, but ten-man Croatia were able to beat them 2-0 to reach the World Cup.
Greece secured their place in Brazil after a 1-1 draw with Romania following the first leg in Greece where they won 3-1. They join the other teams in the 2014 Football World Cup in Brazil.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal of the game to give Portugal the lead over Sweden in their World Cup Qualifying play-off.
Either Ronaldo or Zlatan Imbrahivomic won’t be at the 2014 World Cup as their two teams, Portugal and Sweden, face each other in the World Cup play-off. And Ronaldo gave his side the advantage with a 1-0 win in Lisbon.
France may not be at the World Cup though. They lost 2-0 to Ukraine. Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny was sent off.
Iceland, who have a population of just 320,000, kept their World Cup hopes alive with a no-goal draw against Croatia. Greece have one step in Brazil after a 3-1 victory over Romania.
