League Cup round-up: Liverpool and Chelsea survive scares to progress

Chelsea legend Drogba returned to the club in the summer

League Two Shrewsbury gave Chelsea a run for their money in the League Cup but eventually succumbed 2-1 to the Premier League leaders.

After a goalless first half, Didier Drogba proved he’s still got it with a goal to add to the one he scored against Manchester United on Sunday.

However, Shrewsbury fought back and equalised, but a late own goal saved Chelsea from extra-time and a potential giant-killing to win 2-1.

Mario Balotelli may have just kickstarted his season after inspiring Liverpool to come back to beat Swansea.

Swansea, who beat Liverpool 3-1 two years ago in the competition before going on to win it, lead from Marvin Emnes’ second-half goal.

However, when Balotelli came on late in the game, the Italian turned the game around with an equaliser before Dejan Lovren’s late header gave Liverpool a 2-1 lead.

In other games, Bournemouth followed up on their amazing 8-0 win over Birmingham in the Championship with a 2-1 win over Premier League West Brom. Derby also came back from 2-0 against Fulham to win 5-2.

The full results are:

  • Fulham 2-5 Derby
  • Shrewsbury 1-2 Chelsea
  • MK Dons 1-2 Sheffield United
  • Liverpool 2-1 Swansea
  • Bournemouth 2-1 West Brom
