Festive sporting round-up

First of all, I am very sorry that I have failed to post much on the blog over the festive period. This is because of the lots of different stories to cover, and also the limited opportunities to post. Anyway, here are some of the biggest stories of the Christmas/ New Year period.

Ashes: Australia make it 4-0

England are in the humiliating position of being about to lose the Ashes in a 5-0 whitewash as they lost the fourth test to Australia by eight wickets.

It has been a horrible series since day one for England, and the team that thrashed Australia 3-0 just a few months ago are falling apart completely against the same team.

Mitchell Johnson has certainly been the star of this Ashes series with his amazing bowling, and the Australians batters have also looked like new players in this series.

England, meanwhile, are terrible. Many questions are being asked about captain Alistair Cook and almost everyone else in the Three Lions team.

England need to go away from Australia and have a serious change, or England international cricket may be doomed.

Ashes: Trott leaves tour

Jonathan Trott has struggled in these Ashes, scoring only 9 & 10.

England batsman Jonathan Trott has left their tour of Australia.

The Warwickshire batsman cited a long standing stress-related condition as the cause of his absence. He has struggled in the Ashes this series, as he had only reached a total of 19 in two innings. He had a very tough time against Mitchell Johnson’s bowling. Continue reading “Ashes: Trott leaves tour”

Ashes: England slump to embarrassing defeat

Mitchell Johnson has been the star performer of the Ashes so far, and took figures of 5-42 this innings.

England suffered their second worst defeat in terms of runs as they lost the first Ashes test in Brisbane.

Set a very tough target of 561 from the terrible second and third days, England could have reached it at a score of 142-4, after finishing yesterday on 24-2. However, they went from that scoreline to 151-8 and then 179 all out. It means that the tourists go behind in an Ashes series for the first time in seven years.  Continue reading “Ashes: England slump to embarrassing defeat”

Ashes: England collapse to gift control to Australia

England completely fell apart on the afternoon of the second day to basically hand the Test to Australia.

Chasing a total on 295, England got off to a good start, reaching 82-2. But then the mother of all collapses happened; England went from that scoreline to 136 all out.

England lost six wickets for just nine runs in ten amazing overs. Mitchell Johnson (4-61) ran rampage through England alongside Ryan Harris (3-28). Both bowlers regularly managed speeds of 90 mph – the England line-up simply couldn’t deal with it.

England lost three wickets for no runs at one stage, and Graeme Swann was out for a duck, with Matt Prior doing even worse – a golden duck.

Only Michael Carberry (40) and Stuart Broad (32) scored any higher than 20 for England. Broad had earlier added to his impressive figures against the Australians as he took six wickets.

Never since 1990 in Melbourne where England lost six wickets for three runs has there been such a dramatic wicket loss for the tourists.  Australia batted to 65-0 before the day’s close, leaving England at the very least 224 runs behind.

Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott has labelled England’s collapse as ‘pathetic’ and that they have ‘gifted’ the first test to Australia.

There are three more days of play left in Brisbane.

Mitchell Johnson led the Australian attack with figures of 4-61.
